As the days get shorter and the temperatures start to dip across much of Europe, October is the perfect time to escape to one of the continent’s warmer spots. If, like me, you’re looking to escape the chill with a relaxing beach holiday or an adventurous trip with milder weather, there are plenty of destinations in Europe that offer sun and warmth well into autumn. If you’re wondering where the hottest places in Europe are in October, I’ve got you covered.

Why Travel in October

October is an excellent month for travelling in Europe. The summer crowds will have dispersed, meaning you can enjoy popular destinations without the hustle and bustle of peak season. Flights and accommodation tend to be more affordable, and the weather is still pleasant in many parts of southern Europe. Plus, if you’re chasing the last of the summer sun, you’ll find plenty of spots that offer warm temperatures.

Top Destinations for Hot Weather in Europe This October

Canary Islands, Spain

The Canary Islands are often considered the ultimate autumn escape, thanks to their year-round warm climate. In October, temperatures still reach a pleasant 25-28°C, making it perfect for beach days, hiking, or simply relaxing by the pool. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and Lanzarote are particularly popular, offering a variety of landscapes from volcanic beaches to lush mountains. The Islands can be a tad windy but you can still expect a nice warm temperature.

Cyprus

Cyprus is another excellent choice if you’re after some autumn sun. In October, the island enjoys temperatures around 26-29°C, with plenty of sunshine. Limassol and Paphos are ideal for beachgoers, while the Troodos Mountains offer cooler escapes which are a great place for more adventurous trips. The warm Mediterranean waters are still great for swimming, and you’ll find fewer tourists than during the summer months.

Malta

Marsaxlokk

Malta is one of my favourite spots for autumn sunshine. It remains warm in October with daytime temperatures hovering around 24-27°C, perfect for exploring the historic streets of Valletta or enjoying a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Blue Lagoon. Malta’s small size makes it easy to explore (driving across the entire island only takes around an hour), and the warm autumn weather ensures you can experience both culture and coastlines without rushing. In fair weather, you could even take a trip to the Island of Gozo!

Algarve, Portugal

Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, is known for its stunning coastline, golden beaches, and dramatic cliffs. In October, temperatures remain pleasant, averaging around 22-25°C. It’s a quieter time to visit, with smaller crowds but still plenty of sunshine. There’s plenty to do, from relaxing at the beach to exploring its caves or if you’re feeling energetic, hiking the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.

Crete, Greece

Crete, the largest of the Greek islands, stays warm well into October, with temperatures ranging from 22-26°C. This is where I’ll be this October! The beaches are still inviting, and the sea remains warm enough for swimming. Beyond the beach, Crete offers plenty of cultural experiences, from the ancient Minoan ruins at Knossos to charming traditional villages. It’s a great time to visit, as the summer crowds have thinned but the weather remains lovely.

Sicily, Italy

Sicily Italy

Sicily, just off Italy’s southern coast, stays nice and warm in October, with temperatures around 22-25°C. You can explore the ancient ruins in Agrigento, hike the mighty Mount Etna, or simply kick back on the beaches of Taormina. Sicily really nails the balance between culture, adventure, and relaxation. With its sunny Mediterranean climate, it’s the perfect autumn escape for anyone looking to soak up some sunshine and into the island’s history, and let’s not forget the pizza and pasta!

Tips for Travelling in October

Book in Advance: While October is considered off-peak for most destinations, popular spots can still fill up quickly, especially in the hotter regions.
Pack for Mixed Weather: While you’re chasing the sun, temperatures in Europe can fluctuate in autumn. Although the days are typically nice and warm, the early mornings and evenings can have a slight chill. Make sure to pack layers for these times of day.
Consider Car Hire: Many of the hottest places in Europe in October offer scenic drives, and car hire can give you the freedom to explore more remote areas at your own pace. If you opt not to hire a car, plenty of European destinations have services such as Uber or Bolt to get around.

If you’re looking to extend your summer and enjoy some warm weather in October, these destinations offer the hottest spots in Europe. Whether you’re lounging on the beaches of the Canary Islands, exploring the history of Malta, or hiking the trails of Crete, you’ll find plenty of sunshine and adventure. So, why wait for summer to return when you can avoid the October chill and experience the warmth of these toasty European spots this autumn?
