Climbing Mount Batur in Bali for the sunrise view was one of my most unforgettable memories of Bali. Waking up at 1am isn’t something I’d usually jump at the chance to do but for this it was totally worth it for the sunrise hike! The climb itself was an exhilarating challenge and reaching the top offered incredible views of the sunrise. In this guide, I will share with you all of my top tips for the perfect sunrise hike!

Preparing For the Climb: What You Need to Know

Why Choose Mount Batur

Mount Batur, is an active volcano situated in the heart of Bali, it offers some of the most stunning panoramic views on the island. Standing at 1,717 metres, it is not the tallest volcano in Bali, but it is one of the most accessible and rewarding to climb. The relatively moderate difficulty of the sunrise hike makes it a perfect adventure for both novice and experienced hikers however you will need a decent fitness level. The hike is around 4 hours long in total and parts are strenuous. From experience, other climbers won’t like it if you hold up the group!

When to Climb Mount Batur

While many choose to climb Mount Batur at sunset, the sunrise hike is truly iconic. The early morning trek, starting in the pre-dawn darkness, offers a more thrilling experience as you will hike in the darkness with just the moonlight and your torch to lead the way! And the best part is that you reach the summit just in time for a magical sunrise!

Essential Gear For the Hike

Before setting out, make sure you have the following essentials:

  • Sturdy hiking boots or trainers: The trail can be rocky and uneven.
  • Headlamp or torch: This is essential for the pre-dawn ascent as there will be very little light. Mine was provided by the tour agency I booked though.
  • Sturdy hiking boots or trainers: The trail can be rocky and uneven.
  • Warm clothing/layers: The early morning can be chilly, and the temperature will drop the higher you climb. I opted for a hoodie and this was plenty warm enough for the temperature at the top.
  • Water and snacks: To stay hydrated and energised.
  • Camera, mobile or GoPro: To capture the stunning views.
  • Small backpack: To carry water/food and your jacket and torch as you won’t need these on the way down.

The Climb: Step-by-Step Guide

Starting Point
Most organised treks will provide a transfer service to take you to the starting point. Our transfer brought us to the base of Mount Batur which is where we met with the rest of our group and our guides. We were offered the option to hire coats for the chilly summit and were given our torches for the climb. From here we began the trek

The Ascent: What to Expect
The hike typically starts around 3 AM and takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on your pace. The trail is well-marked but can be steep in sections. The beginning of the climb is an easy walk with minimal incline however as the more you ascend, the steeper and more challenging the climb becomes. There are some sections that are slippery or have loose gravel making it difficult to keep balanced, and don’t forget it’s going to be dark! I saw a few slips and trips on my climb. Make sure you have footwear with a good grip to avoid this.

You’ll arrive at the summit just before dawn, ready for the sun to come up. The sky begins to lighten, casting a soft glow over the landscape. From the top, you will be able to see the vast expanse of Lake Batur and even the distant peaks of Mount Agung and Mount Rinjani on a clear day. You can also see dark markings on the ground below the volcano from previous eruptions!

Sunrise at the Summit

Watching the sunrise from Mount Batur really is a sight to behold. As the sun rises, it paints the sky with shades of orange, pink, and gold, illuminating the landscape and creating a breathtaking panorama.

Whilst watching the sunset we were offered breakfast. An interesting combination of a banana sandwich and a boiled egg which I believe is the standard for most of the guided volcano trips!

Once the sun is up, you will get a chance to explore the summit where you will be able to see steam emanating from the active volcano. There are also monkeys that roam around atop the volcano which adds to the adventure of the experience!

The Descent: Making Your Way Back
After witnessing the stunning sunrise, it’s time to make your way back down. The descent is usually much quicker, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. As the morning light increases, you’ll have a chance to fully appreciate the beauty of the trail and the surrounding landscape.
