Are you dreaming of jetting off to exotic destinations without breaking the bank? Finding affordable flights can be quite the task but if you know where to look and how to strategise, you can definitely bag a bargain! In this post, I’ll share my tips to help you snag incredible airfare deals and embark on your next journey without emptying your wallet. And we know what that means.. more spending money!!
Be Flexible with Your Dates
I know for many of us this isn’t always possible, but if you can be flexible, this is the key to finding cheap flights. If your travel plans aren’t set in stone, consider altering your departure and return dates by a few days. Airlines often offer lower fares for mid-week flights or flights that are outside of peak travel times.
Sign Up for Price Alerts
Subscribe to fare alerts from various airlines and travel websites. These services will notify you when prices for your desired route drop, allowing you to snap up a great deal when it becomes available.
Use a Private Browsing Window
When searching for flights, make sure you’re using a private browsing window. Some websites may increase prices based on your search history, so clearing your cookies can also work to your advantage.
Compare Prices Across Multiple Airlines and Travel Agencies
Don’t rely on a single airline or travel agency. Take the time to compare prices across multiple platforms to find the best deal. Websites like Skyscanner, Kayak, and Expedia are fantastic resources for flight comparisons in the UK. Skyscanner is my personal go-to!
Consider Budget Airlines
Budget airlines, such as EasyJet and Ryanair, can offer significantly lower fares for travelling overseas. However, be aware of their additional fees for services like checked baggage, seat selection, and meals. Travelling light and packing your own food can save a fortune!
Think About Nearby Airports
Check prices for airports near your departure and destination cities. Sometimes, flying from a smaller, less busy airport can save you a significant amount in travel and parking expenses!
Use Air Miles and Credit Card Rewards
If you have air miles or credit card rewards, consider using them to offset the cost of your flight. You can also earn miles by signing up for airline loyalty programs or using specific credit cards for your purchases. I’ve saved a fortune using air miles for flights and for upgrades thanks to my dad’s frequent business travel. (Shoutout to Steve!) 🙌
Fly at Unusual Hours
Early-morning or late-night flights are often cheaper than those during the day. If you can adjust your schedule, you may save a bundle on airfare.
Follow Airlines on Social Media or Sign Up to Newsletters
Airlines often announce flash sales or special discounts on their social media channels and these offers can quickly sell out. Make sure you follow them so you can stay up to date with promotions.
Check for Package Deals
Sometimes, bundling your flight with a hotel or car rental can result in overall savings. Explore package deals on travel websites such as Jet2, TUI or Expedia.
There you have it, my top 10 tips to save on flights. I will more than happily sit at the back of the plane, 20 rows away from my friends or family, at 3 in the morning if it means £14.99 flights! Would you do the same?
