Whether you’re searching for luxury hotels with caldera views, budget-friendly accommodations, or something in between, finding the perfect spot to stay can really elevate your experience. In this comprehensive guide, I’ll help you discover the ideal accommodation in Santorini, ensuring your trip is truly unforgettable.
Oia
Why Stay in Oia
Oia is renowned for its breathtaking sunsets, drawing visitors from around the world every evening. Standing on a cliffside, watching the sun dip below the horizon, turning the sky into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple over the stunning caldera is a once-in-a-lifetime scene, often described as a dream come true.
If you’re looking for luxury accommodations in Santorini, Oia is the place to be. The village offers a selection of high-end hotels and villas that provide stunning caldera views, many featuring private pools, top-tier service, and all the luxury amenities you could need for a perfect stay.
Wandering through the charming streets of Oia is an experience in itself. Picture walking along cobblestone pathways lined with white-washed buildings, vibrant bougainvilleas, and unique local boutiques. These streets are filled with shops and restaurants, offering plenty of opportunities to explore traditional crafts and indulge in delicious Greek cuisine.
Potential Drawbacks
- Crowds: Oia’s popularity, especially for its famous sunsets, means it can get incredibly crowded, particularly during peak tourist seasons (summer). The crowds can detract from the experience, making it harder to fully enjoy the beauty of the area. To avoid this, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons when crowds are thinner.
- Cost: Oia is one of the most expensive places to stay in Santorini due to its luxury offerings and popularity. Accommodation, dining, and shopping tend to be pricier here compared to other parts of the island. If you’re travelling on a budget, staying in Oia might be more challenging.
- Accessibility: Many of Oia’s accommodations are boutique hotels and villas built into the cliffs. While these offer spectacular views, they come with practical challenges. Stairs, uneven pathways, and slippery surfaces can be difficult to navigate, particularly for those with mobility issues or heavy luggage.
- Traffic/Parking: Traffic congestion is common in Oia, especially during the busy summer months. Finding parking can also be a hassle due to limited spaces and the high volume of visitors. This could pose a problem if you plan on renting a car during your stay.
If you’re planning to stay in Oia, here are some top-rated hotels to consider:
- Canaves Oia Suites: Known for its elegant design, this hotel offers suites that are carved into the cliffside, providing panoramic views of the Aegean Sea. Each suite comes with a private plunge pool or hot tub.
- Katikies Hotel: This iconic hotel is famous for its Cycladic architecture and luxurious amenities. Featuring multiple infinity pools and spacious suites, Katikies promises an unforgettable stay.
- Andronis Luxury Suites: Perfect for honeymooners, this hotel offers romantic suites with stunning views, private jacuzzis, and personalized services. The ambiance here is both intimate and luxurious.

Why Imerovigli is the Perfect Serene Getaway in Santorini
Peaceful Atmosphere at Imerovigli
Imerovigli is a haven for those looking to escape the bustling crowds of Santorini. Located on the highest point of the caldera, this village provides some of the best panoramic views of the island. The calm, serene vibe makes it the perfect destination for those seeking a peaceful vacation filled with relaxation and stunning sunsets.
Hiking and Outdoor Adventure in Imerovigli
One of the top attractions in Imerovigli is its proximity to scenic hiking trails. Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty of opportunities to explore Santorini’s natural beauty, with trails offering breathtaking views of the caldera, cliffs, and the Aegean Sea. Hiking from Imerovigli to nearby villages, like Oia or Fira, is a fantastic adventurous way to explore the stunning landscapes of Santorini and provides a unique, off-the-beaten-path experience. The hike from Imerovigli to Fira is an easy 2-kilometer hike. The hike to Oia from Imerogilvi is a bit more challenging and is around 8 kilometers.
Potential Drawbacks of Staying in Imerovigli: What to Consider Before Booking
- Limited Nightlife In Imerovigli: Imerovigli is known for its tranquility, and with that comes a much quieter atmosphere compared to places like Fira or Oia. The limited nightlife options in Imerovigli might be disappointing if you’re looking for vibrant bars, clubs, or late-night activities. If an active nightlife scene is a priority for your trip, you may need to venture to other parts of the island.
- Fewer Dining and Shopping Options in Imerovigli: While there are some excellent restaurants and cafes in Imerovigli, the village has fewer options compared to the bustling areas of Fira and Oia. If you’re seeking a wide variety of dining options in Imerovigli, be prepared for a smaller selection, and you may need to travel if you want a bit more diversity.
- Accessibility Challenges in Imerovigli: Perched on the cliffs of the caldera, Imerovigli’s steep, narrow pathways and numerous steps can pose challenges, especially for those with mobility issues. Navigating the village can be physically demanding, particularly during the hotter months, making it less accessible for certain visitors.
- Distance From Beaches: Like Fira and Oia, Imerovigli is perched high on the caldera cliffs, meaning there are no direct beaches near Imerovigli. If beach time is a significant part of your holiday plans, you’ll need to travel to other parts of Santorini, which can be time-consuming and somewhat inconvenient.
- Cost of Staying in Imerogilvi: Although generally more affordable than Oia, Imerovigli is still considered a premium location on Santorini. The price of accommodations, particularly those with stunning caldera views, can be quite high. Dining costs also tend to be elevated, especially in places with exceptional views of the sunset.

Pyrgos
Pyrgos is a hidden gem in Santorini, offering a mix of beauty and history. It’s not as crowded as some of the island’s more famous spots, making it a great place for those seeking a quieter experience. With its traditional architecture, stunning views, and rich culture, Pyrgos is a fantastic choice for your stay.
Why Stay in Pyrgos
Pyrgos offers a blend of traditional charm and modern amenities. One of the first things you’ll notice is the traditional architecture. The village is filled with whitewashed houses, narrow winding streets, and blue-domed churches. It’s like stepping back in time but with all the comforts of today.
Another big draw is the panoramic island views. Pyrgos is perched on a hill, giving you a 360-degree view of Santorini. From the top, you can see the caldera, the Aegean Sea, and the island’s many vineyards and villages. It’s one of the best spots on the island for photography lovers.
Pyrgos also boasts a rich history. The village itself is centuries old and was once the capital of Santorini. As you wander through its streets, you’ll find numerous historical buildings and monuments. The atmosphere is both relaxing and enriching, offering a unique cultural experience.
Potential Drawbacks
- Limited Tourism Infrastructure: Pyrgos is less developed for tourism compared to Fira and Oia. While this can offer a more authentic experience, it also means there are fewer amenities and services tailored to tourists. You may find fewer restaurants, shops, and accommodations options compared to the more touristy areas.
- Limited Nightlife and Entertainment: Pyrgos is a quiet village, particularly in the evenings. If you’re seeking vibrant nightlife with bars, clubs, and late-night entertainment, you may find Pyrgos lacking in options compared to larger towns like Fira.

While this adds to the village’s charm, it can also present challenges for those with mobility issues. Navigating the village can be physically demanding, especially in the heat.
